Plant-Based PLA Lining
The inner barrier is made from PLA derived from renewable corn starch, replacing petroleum PE. The result is a cup that is easier to handle at end of life in composting systems.
Hot and cold paper cups lined with plant-based PLA instead of petroleum plastic. Single, double and ripple wall options, fully printable, with matching lids for every size.
How a thin plant-based lining turns paperboard into a leak-proof cup, what single and double wall constructions offer, and how to choose the right cup for each drink.
PLA coated disposable paper cups are hot and cold beverage cups made from food-grade paperboard with a thin lining of polylactic acid on the inside surface. The paperboard gives the cup its structure, its printable outer wall and its familiar feel in the hand. The PLA lining forms an invisible barrier that stops coffee, tea, juice and soda from soaking through the paper. Together they replace the traditional polyethylene (PE) lining, which is derived from petroleum and makes recovery of the cup more difficult.
For a café owner, the cup is the most visible piece of packaging in the whole business. It is carried through the streets, photographed, placed on desks and left in cars. A cup that leaks, buckles or burns the hand destroys the experience in seconds, while a cup that feels solid and looks distinctive carries the brand to every corner of the neighbourhood. PLA coated cups are designed to hold up under those daily demands while using a plant-based, compostable-friendly lining.
PLA coating is not just a swap of one plastic for another. It changes how the cup is handled at end of life. Where an industrial composting facility accepts certified items, a PLA-lined cup can be processed together with food waste and coffee grounds, which removes the need to separate lining from paper. That makes the cup an attractive option for events, offices and venues where waste streams are carefully managed.
Cup production begins with large rolls of paperboard that have been coated with PLA by extrusion or dispersion. Sheets are printed with the design, die-cut into fan-shaped blanks for the side wall and into round discs for the bottom. The blank is rolled, its seam heat-sealed and the bottom is attached and curled to form a leak-tight base. The rim is rolled to provide a smooth drinking edge and to give the lid something to grip.
Every step affects performance. If the PLA layer is too thin, liquid may penetrate the paper along the seam; if the seam is poorly sealed, the cup will weep at the side. Rim curling affects both comfort and lid fit. Quality teams therefore test cups with hot water, run leak checks and measure rim dimensions on a regular schedule.
As with other PLA products, heat is the main limitation. The lining is designed for typical hot beverages served at normal temperatures and for the time it takes to drink them. It is not intended for prolonged storage of very hot liquid, and the cup should not be reheated in a microwave. Following those simple guidelines keeps the lining intact.
For disposal, the right message is essential. Certified PLA-lined cups are designed for industrial composting, not for standard paper recycling streams, and they will not compost in a landfill or garden. Pairing cups with clearly marked compost bins, and with lids that are also compostable, creates a consistent, credible system rather than an empty claim.
Beyond the cup itself, a few operating habits make the biggest difference. Warm cups slightly with a splash of hot water before espresso service to reduce thermal shock, avoid overfilling above the lid line, and snap lids on firmly all around the rim. Train baristas to inspect each sleeve for crushed edges before loading the dispenser. These small steps reduce leaks and complaints, and they help the cup deliver the quality for which it was designed.

Cups designed for the daily rush — leak-free, comfortable in the hand and consistent in the way they carry your brand.
The inner barrier is made from PLA derived from renewable corn starch, replacing petroleum PE. The result is a cup that is easier to handle at end of life in composting systems.
Heat-sealed side seams and carefully curled bottoms prevent weeping. Each lot is sampled with hot water and inspected for seepage before packing and shipping.
Single wall for economy, double wall for insulation and ripple wall for a textured, premium grip. A choice of constructions lets one supplier cover a full menu.
Rim diameters follow common lid sizes, so cups pair with compostable PLA lids, paper lids or standard sip lids. Fit testing avoids loose lids and spills in transit.
The smooth outer wall takes up to six colours with fine detail. Solid-colour cups, patterns and photographic designs can all be produced to your artwork.

How a plant-lined paper cup compares with the standard PE-lined paper cup and a rigid plastic cup.
The standard paper cup uses a PE lining that is hard to separate from the paper and is therefore rarely recycled. Plastic cups are strong and clear, but they are bulky and increasingly restricted. Neither option offers an easy compostable end-of-life.
PLA lined paper cups provide the familiar feel and print surface of a paper cup, but with a plant-based lining that can be certified for industrial composting. For cafés and venues that run their own composting programme or have access to commercial composting, they are a natural step.
The comparison on the right summarises material origin, composting, heat handling, printing and regulatory outlook, and gives buyers a framework for weighing up quotations from multiple suppliers.
| Attribute | PLA Lined Cup | PE Lined Cup | Plastic Cup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lining material | Plant-based PLA | Petroleum PE | None (rigid plastic) |
| Industrial compostable | Yes, if certified | No | No |
| Hot drinks | Good to about 90 °C | Excellent | Acceptable |
| Cold drinks | Excellent | Excellent | Excellent |
| Print surface | Full wall | Full wall | Limited |
| Storage volume | Nested, compact | Nested, compact | Bulky |
| Customer perception | Positive | Neutral | Negative |

From plant sugar to a wrapped straw on a café counter — five stages that define the quality of the finished product.
Plant sugars from corn starch or sugarcane are fermented by bacteria to produce lactic acid, the building block of the polymer.
Lactic acid molecules are linked into long chains to form PLA resin, which is then pelletised for easy handling and transport.
The resin is melted and pushed through precision dies to form straw tubes with a consistent wall thickness and smooth surface finish.
Tubes are cut to length, the ends are finished to remove burrs, and samples are checked for straightness, diameter and appearance.
Each straw is sealed into its own paper wrapper — plain or printed — then counted into inner boxes and master cartons.
From forest fibre and plant starch to certified disposal — the full journey of a PLA coated paper cup.
Paperboard from renewable fibre is coated with PLA made from fermented corn starch.
Sheets are printed, die-cut and formed into cups, with heat-sealed seams and curled rims.
Cups are sampled for leaks, seam strength and rim dimension, then sleeved and packed.
The cup serves hot or cold drinks, supported by a matching lid and, if needed, a sleeve.
Collected with food waste, the cup is processed in industrial composting, where lining and paper break down together.
With two manufacturing bases and long-standing export partnerships, our PLA coated paper cups reach customers across five main regions.
Paper cups are shipped in compact nested sleeves, which makes them efficient to store, but they still need protection from moisture and crushing. Keep cartons sealed and stored off the floor in a dry area.
Avoid stacking heavy cartons on top of cup boxes, since crushed rims and deformed sidewalls cause lid-fit problems. Store cartons away from direct sunlight and heat, which can warm the PLA lining over time.
At the counter, keep cup sleeves in covered dispensers and place lids close by. Training staff to pull cups from the bottom of the sleeve, not the top, keeps the rim clean and avoids contact with the drinking edge.
If you operate a compost programme, put clearly labelled bins in the customer area and in the kitchen. Signs that show a cup, a lid and a sleeve together make it easy for customers to place all three in the right container.
